UK COVID inquiry, whose hearing has begun today, June 13, 2023, has been setup to view how UK responded to pandemic? What were the challenges? Mechanism devised to tackle those challenges? What were the mistakes? And the measures taken to cover those mistakes.
During this public hearing, people from all the four nations of UK, who suffered during the pandemic in any way, got a chance to express their opinions and views of the tragedy. Films recorded for inquiry purposes include some really heart-wrenching and emotional scenes.
UK COVID Inquiry In Charge:
Former appeal court judge Lady Heather Hallett is the going to chair this Inquiry. She is running this independent inquiry established by then Prime Minister, Boris Johnson. Chambers legal guide describes her as “one of the best inquest skills on the market.”

In charge of Inquiry, Hallett said “we couldn’t find a venue that was perfect, available for the time that we shall need it, and that would not cost the taxpayer an exorbitant sum of money”. Every minute will be streamed on YouTube.

Who Will Take Part in the inquiry?
Around 70 witnesses are going to take part in this inquiry during the first session/mode. This began with Dr. Whitworth and Dr. Charlotte Hammer, who are experts in infectious diseases, epidemiology and health care.
Other key witnesses include three prime ministers, Cameron, Johnson and Rishi Saunak, and some cabinet ministers, health and scientific experts of relevant departments.
Modules of Inquiry:
This inquiry comprises of three core modules. And each module has its own core participants. Like, the first module/ section will cover participation from 27 organizations or individuals. Similarly the second module will cover 39 organizations or individuals.
UK COVID Inquiry Expenditures:
According to “The Guardian”, even before starting the inquiry officially, 23 million pounds has spent. According to Tussell, a company that is responsible to monitor all government contracts, have issued long-term contracts for around 126 million pounds.
The government will give compensation to families of COVID-affected persons, resulting in a huge burden on tax-payers.
Time the Inquiry may take:
The hearings on this inquiry are expected to last until the end of the year 2026, and there is a possibility that they may extend until the beginning of 2027. The organization is likely to post reports on hearing as per proceeding.
