Spotify, the renowned music streaming company, has commenced official testing of a groundbreaking playlist that automatically downloads users’ recent favourite songs, a project they have been diligently working on for a couple of years.
In a tweet, Daniel Ek, the CEO of Spotify, revealed that Spotify has been experimenting with a feature called “Your Offline Mix”. While Ek refrains from divulging specific details, the public is eager to know when Spotify intends to make this feature available. From the screenshot shared by Ek, it is evident that these playlists can encompass several hours’ worth of music. This functionality is immensely beneficial for individuals who find themselves boarding a flight without pre-downloaded tracks. It’s worth noting that Spotify already permits playlist downloads for offline listening.
Users Spot New Offline Mix Feature on Spotify
Several users have reported spotting this feature within their Spotify apps. However, the exact territories in which it is rolling out the offline mix remain unknown. Moreover, the availability of this feature for free users raises additional queries. We have reached out to Spotify for clarification and will provide an update as soon as we receive a response.
Back in 2020, Jane Manchun Wong, a revered reverse engineer, discovered that Spotify was diligently developing an offline mix feature. However, the feature never saw the light of day. With Ek’s recent confirmation, it appears that the feature is now on track to be made available to users in the foreseeable future.
YouTube Music, one of Spotify’s rivals, has already implemented a similar “Offline mixtape” feature. Moreover, the service, owned by Google, can automatically download up to 500 songs across different playlists by activating the “Smart download” functionality. Per the figures shared during Spotify’s previous earnings call, the company currently boasts a staggering user base of over 500 million people.
