The Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) has granted Rs23 million to the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) to address financial needs related to the national team’s recent participation in the Asian Champions Trophy held in China. This funding is considered a crucial measure to ensure the team remains competitive on the international stage.
Prior to their departure for China, PHF officials had reported a significant financial shortfall, which led them to seek loans to cover the expenses of the tournament. The PSB had committed to reimbursing these costs, a promise that has now been fulfilled with the release of Rs23 million.
In addition to this recent allocation, the Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) and the PSB have provided a special grant of Rs96.65 million to the PHF over the last six months. This grant was aimed at supporting the federation’s involvement in various international competitions.
Despite the financial challenges, the Pakistan national hockey team delivered a strong performance at the Asian Champions Trophy. Although they narrowly missed out on the finals, losing in a penalty shootout to the host nation, China, they secured a bronze medal by defeating Korea 5-2 in the third-place match. Earlier in the tournament, Pakistan showcased their competitive edge in a tight group-stage match against traditional rivals India, ultimately falling 1-2.
This support from the PSB is vital for the continued development and success of hockey in Pakistan, reflecting a commitment to enhancing the team’s performance and international presence.
